Vocabulary Podcast #1

Hello students! Welcome to Mr. Olivard’s weekly vocabulary podcast. Throughout the course of the year your vocabulary words and definitions will be featured on a podcast on my website along with their parts of speech and an example of the words being used in a sentence. This is of course in addition to your having access the words and definitions in written form in your vocabulary book. Your having access to this information in a podcast format is helpful in a couple of ways. First of all, studies show that long term retention of information is aided not only by reading the information, but by hearing it and speaking it as well. Therefore, I encourage you to stop the podcast after each definition and speak the word and its definition. I think you will find that you will memorize the words and definitions much more quickly. In addition, having access to this vocabulary podcast will eliminate the need for us to cover the vocabulary words in depth in class. We won’t really need to cover them in class at all unless you have a specific question about a particular word. Also, by hearing the words pronounced correctly on a repeated basis you will remember how to pronounce the word when using it in conversation. Finally, and perhaps the most helpful feature of the vocabulary podcast is that you can download it to your iPod and study anywhere, anytime, under any circumstances. You might want to study while waiting on the sideline to go into the game, while you’re flipping burgers at Wendy’s or folding shirts at Hollister, or while you’re waiting for your friend to be finished getting her nails done. No matter what the situation, you’ll have easy access to those vocabulary words. So now without further ado let’s get started with this week’s vocabulary words.
